Scary Costume Coupons & Promo Codes for Halloween 2012

Scary Costumes

It’s called “Fright Night” for a reason! One of the few remnants of “All Hallow’s Eve” is the tradition of wearing scary costumes—in the past, it was to ward off evil spirits; now, it’s all in good fun. On Halloween night, the streets are filled with skeletons, zombies, witches and vampires—and those are just some of the classics! Horror movie fans always have a staple of vicious villains to choose from—Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, Ghostface from Scream just to name a few. For a fresh look, you can always take a “happy” look and make it scary, such as the Zombie Prom Queen or the Scary Clown.

Being scared is synonymous with Halloween night, but it’s all in good fun. Kids and adults, girls and boys—everyone can mix and match to decide what level of “fright” they want! A scary Halloween costume is suitable for all shapes and sizes. Here are just a few examples that you can choose from this Halloween.

    Scary Costumes: A Halloween Tradition

Although many people think trick-or-treating is a recent Halloween tradition, it actually dates back to the Middle Ages. The practice can be traced back to Ireland and Britain where the poor population would perform a similar task called “souling”. They would go door-to-door on November 1st asking for food. The first wave of immigrants, who strove to bring some of their former traditions with them, introduced souling to the U.S. Trick-or-treating did not become extremely popular in the United States until the late 1940s. Many think trick-or-treating was created to curb vandalism on Halloween, but no evidence has ever been presented to support this idea. In fact, many adults at the time had no clue what trick-or-treating was—kids often had to explain to adults what they were doing on their doorsteps. And the practice wasn’t accepted widely: On Halloween 1948, members of the Madison Square Boys’ Club in New York City carried a parade banner that read "American Boys Don't Beg".

Halloween is not the same everywhere. Even in the United States, there are different variants of the holiday: Children of the St. Louis, Missouri area are expected to perform a joke, usually a simple Halloween-themed pun or riddle, before receiving any candy; this "trick" earns them a “treat.” In some parts of Ohio, Iowa, Massachusetts and other states, the night designated for trick-or-treating is referred to as Beggars’ Night, and in some communities it is held on the night before Halloween.
