Carry On Luggage

For the majority of overnight and short business trips, a 22-inch carry-on bag with a suiter compartment is a must have especially given that your chances of receiving checked luggage these days seems to be declining by the month.  Unless congress steps in and sets some guidelines, your only guarantee of having your clothes when you get to your destination is if you take the matter (i.e., bag) into your own hands.  A 22-inch rolling suitcase gives you the maximum amount of space under the government’s carry on regulations.

Pros
  • Fits carry-on luggage requirements for domestic travel
  • Very lightweight and features a durable nylon fabric with DuraGuard coating
Cons
  • May not fit all international travel carry-on luggage requirements

I purchased my first Travel Pro Crew bag about ten years ago.  Appropriately named, the Crew Series is designed for airline crew personnel who can often be seen with this bag.  The design is intended to maximize the allowable space under the carry-on luggage requirements and stand up to daily abuse. With the exception of a lost wheel, which was easily replaced, my original Travel Pro Crew still looks pretty good after almost ten years of use.  Recently, however, I used two business trips (including one overseas) as an opportunity to try out the latest version called the Travelpro Crew 6 22" Expandable Rollaboard Suiter.  This new model is about five iterations ahead of my older model and is improved in almost every way.

The Travelpro Crew 6 22" Expandable Rollaboard Suiter is very light, weighing in at less than ten pounds and features a durable nylon fabric with DuraGuard® coating.  It also has very heavy duty zippers and wheels in addition to a reinforced handle.  Having looked at about ten different bags, the Travel Pro is clearly the leader in the suiter department.  Their suiter section is very well designed and will probably hold one to two suits or a few shirts and pants.  I particularly like that the suiter is easily removed or expanded and is also zippered into place once loaded so that items do not shift.  This was an issue with my older model and is important for the business traveler who does not want their dress clothes to come out looking as if they were rolled up.  The Travelpro Crew 6 22” also comes with an expansion feature that can add about two more inches when needed.

Other Notable Features:

  • Zippered pocket with two elastic mesh pockets
  • Two elastic shoe pockets and adjustable hold-down straps
  • Removable toiletry divider with multiple pockets (this is great for the new TSA rules because it saves space and stays on top)
  • Hideaway hamper
  • Water-resistant lining
  • Lifetime warranty

For the business traveler or the traveler who prefers to carry on, this is really the prefect bag and is a nice combination of form and function.  It’s also very reasonably priced versus many competitive products.  The picture above gives you a great sense of all the features that are packed into this suitcase.

Some international travel carry-on luggage requirements are more stringent than domestic especially when it comes to weight.  Air France would not let me carry this on a Boston to Paris flight, which was a huge bummer, especially since they forgot to put it on the plane after they made me check it.  At the end of the day, if it’s good enough for people who travel for a living, it’s good enough for me.
