For starters, who or what was “Fuzzy Wuzzy”? The British gave Hadendoa soldiers from the Sudan this nickname in the 1800s due to their matted hairy appearance. Unlike many of the soldiers that the British fought, they had a great respect for the “Fuzzy Wuzzies” due to their excellent fighting skills. The British made up a few rhymes about their enemy, and those rhymes eventually evolved into the children’s rhyme that we know today.
