Everyone we know is always looking to find a baby gift that is high quality, personal and unique. This is especially true when you get into a 2nd or 3rd kid and all of the clothes and baby gear have already been bought. We have been the recipient of some great blankets over the years and they end up staying with our kids. However, like many other products you have to be careful with blankets about where they are made and what they are made of as looks can be deceiving.

The folks from Cherry Blossom Baby recently sent us one of their Old MacDonald Blankets to test out. They are a family run company based in Santa Cruz, California and the blankets are handmade in the US and use only FDA approved lead and chemical free material. The presentation of the blanket is very nice and comes with an attached gift tag which is a nice touch. There is a printed side with a cute design made up of farm animals and fleece side which is very soft to the touch. The other feature I had not seen before was “curved corners” on the blanket which eliminate any points and add a nice design touch.

At $55, the blankets from Cherry Blossom will make a great gift and are likely to last long enough to be passed along. Most orders ship within 2-3 business days so you can also get your gift out quickly.

Last year, the nice folks from Cuddoozle sent me a nursing pillow that they wanted us to review and I told them I would have to wait for the next baby to arrive in the fall to have my wife test it out. During this time, a friend was in town for an unexpected delivery with their first baby, so I brought the pillow to her in the hospital to use and she wanted to keep it. As a result, this is now a guest review, which is a Bobby’s Best first. Here was her feedback.

“This nursing pillow was great and was a huge help while I was in the hospital those first few days. I loved the fact that it was firm and really held the baby in place. The little pillow that comes with it helps you keep the baby on an angle when you are nursing, you just position it under the nursing pillow exactly where you want it and then easily switch from one side to the other. It also really helped me keep my son propped up while he was was nursing which was great because of his reflux. Last but not least, the cover was also really easy to remove and wash which is a huge benefit. I recommend this pillow over the boppy to my friends.”

This will be my ninth year as a “Big”—and my most challenging so far. My “little brother” Dion has faced numerous issues stemming from his refusal to identify participants in a crime he witnessed out of fear of retaliation. As a result, the victim then implicated him in the crime, and without a strong advocate, he began to fall through the cracks of the juvenile justice system. At one point, he was actually minutes away from being incarcerated until he turned 18. During this difficult period, Big Brothers Big Sisters was invaluable to Dion, his mother and myself as we worked to ensure his safety and well-being. I am happy to report that Dion is now on a path to stability.

Like Dion, most of the kids in the BBBMB program do not start life on an even playing field or have access to the resources that we often take for granted. They need our help.

Over the past seven years, I have raised more $50,000 through the Rodman Ride for Kids, 100% of which has gone to match kids with mentors and support their relationships. Currently, 2,500 active one-to-one relationships are managed by the organization—and another 500+ littles are on the waiting list. Sponsors cover the overhead for the bike ride so that 100% of your donations go directly to BBBSMB.

When the folks at Polliwalks sent me some samples of their latest kids shoes, I at first was not sure how they were different from Crocs, but I quickly noticed that all of their shoes come with the front in the shape of a duck, alligator, frog, or lady bug. These plastic clogs are great; my kids were pretty excited that their shoe had an animal “face” and to discover that their new shoes incorporated animal tracks into the treads. They has a lot of fun at the beach trekking around in the sand just so they could make their own prints! Developed by a couple living in Newburyport, the small 5 person team has managed to create a product that’s fun and unique. Poliwalks are great for the summer as they’re waterproof, clean easily in the washing machine, and the soft foam allows for an easy slip on or off. I also like Polliwalks environmental focus, in the production of the shoe, no material is wasted and excess plastics are used in other parts of the shoe. I would definitely recommend Polliwalks to any parent with kids up to 12, they make a fun, practical gift.

I love to ski, but my feet are always cold due to poor circulation. For years, I used to buy boots that were too big to give me the wiggle room that I needed, but this really took away from performance. Also, the disposable heaters really get in your way. However, along with warmer boot liners, the latest Hotronic M3/M4 Ski Boot Warmers made a huge difference for me and have brought the fun back to skiing. Hotronic’s have a heating pad that goes under your foot bed in your ski boot which is then connected to rechargeable battery pack. The system keeps your feet warm for hours. I am currently testing out the redesigned Hotronic Power Plus M3’s which work very well and don’t have the same memory problems that plagues older Hotronic models.

If you are frustrated by all the junk mail that you receive and just throw away, here is a two step remedy which will help reduce your unwanted mail and spare a few trees. The two biggest sources of junk mail are from catalogs and credit card pre-approvals.

Credit Card Opt-Out www.optoutprescreen.com
Run by the credit card industry, this service will reduce the pre-approvals you receive by about 80% after a few months. It’s mandatory for the large issuers to purchase this list.

              DMA’s Mail Preference Service www.dmachoice.org/MPS
All large catalog mailers must update their records against this opt-out list every few months and add you to their do not mail list if your name is included. Remember to do this for each person living at your address. Registration lasts five years.

It’s pretty amazing the impact that one person can have with their opinion. Last week I posted a quick blog entry (below) regarding the Biometric fingerprint reader on my new Dell Notebook because I was frustrated with the installation process. Immediately after, I noticed a huge spike in visits from a Yahoo! Message board which I couldn’t identify. Then, a gentlemen e-mails me to tell me that my post has been the main topic of discussion the past two days on the Yahoo finance board for a public company called Wave Systems, which manufactures the software for the reader. Upon visiting the board, I learned that the stock was just announced for delisting and seems to have quite a bit of controversy and dubious promoters. I guess my posting was one of the first customer reviews of the product and someone found it and posted it there. There was also a reply to my post by someone named J. Cain that reads like a press release leading me to believe that he/she works for or on behalf of the company. You can follow the history with the links below. It’s quite amusing, especially since my post was really about Dell and my mention of Wave was more of a side note.

There is nothing more frustrating from a customer prospective than a very poorly implemented product launch. When I ordered my new Dell D620 laptop a few weeks ago, I was given the option of adding a biometric fingerprint reader for about $50, which would allow me to use a finger rather than a password to log onto Windows. These devices have been gaining popularity for the past year and the price point seemed right. However, when I got my computer, I couldn’t find any documentation on the system or how to use it, so I called Dell. They explained that the necessary software was actually not installed and had to be added manually to my computer’s BIOS for some security reasons. A rep then proceeded to direct me to a site to download the driver and walked me through the process which took about 40 minutes. I was then transferred to the manufacturer of the product, Wave Systems, whose support team walked me through the very poorly designed and complicated enrollment process, which took another 20 minutes. The whole time, I kept asking both parties if they were really doing this for every single person that had one of these devices installed on their laptop and the answer I got was yes. Putting the obvious customer service issues with this process aside, how can you make money on a product at this price point which requires so much human intervention? For a company that prides itself on the efficiency of its operations, I really don’t get how they let this product roll out the door in this fashion.

I have been a customer of Fidelity Investments for over 10 years. Since the internet began to take off, Fidelity has done a great job developing web based tools for making customer service more “self service”. It’s actually faster and easier for me to use their website than to call customer service for things like changing my address, ordering checks, etc. Likewise, I find the new self-service check-in kiosks at airports to be very convenient and most importantly, a better alternative to waiting in line.

I bring up these examples because of my frustration with the automated checkout machines at the Home Depot, especially the West Roxbury MA store which I frequent. Home Depot has been increasingly phasing in these machines in favor of regular check-out stations, especially for the late night shifts when automated checkout is often the only option. These machines are a huge step backwards in customer service. When they actually work, they are extremely finicky, can’t handle complicated or competitor coupons and are sub optimal for the types of items that people buy at Home Depot, many of which have a measurement or weight component that determines price. Also, many items won’t fit in the special holding area on the machine which uses the weight of the product to verify that you have purchased it, thereby producing an error and getting the attendant involved. Additionally, as soon as a person has a problem, it pretty much shuts down the whole line. It’s gotten to the point where the lines are so bad on a crowded day, that I have started driving further to Lowe’s just to avoid the checkout hassle. If Home Depot is keen on this technology, they should restrict it to “quick checkout” purchases and more adequately staff their registers so that customers can make their purchases in a reasonable period of time. Technology for technology sake is often the quickest way to lose a customer.
