The Product: Double Stroller

There are two basic types of double strollers (Side to Side & Front to Back) and both have their drawbacks. Although front to back strollers are narrow, they can be very difficult to steer and to navigate because you can’t really get any lift on them with the weight of both children. They can also be heavy and clunky. Side to side strollers are easier to use and maneuver, but can be hard to get in and out of doorways or navigate through narrow aisles in a store or restaurant.

Recommendation: Phil & Ted's Sport Buggy Review

The Phil & Ted’s Sport Buggy sets the standard for double strollers and in my opinion is the best all purpose double stroller on the market today. It has a brilliant design that overcomes most of the shortcomings of both traditional types of double strollers. It’s no bigger than a regular jogging stroller and uses a top and down approach to carrying two kids. It can be used for a walk or a light job, as a neighborhood stroller, but it also fits into the trunk of car easily and fairly compactly and is portable enough to travel with or take on vacation.  The Phil and Teds Sport Buggy, like the previous generation E3 is a actually a single stroller with an innovative toddler seat attachment which turns it into a double stroller.  As seen in the pictures below, where the toddler seat attaches (front or back) depends on the age of the younger child.  One of the nice features of the Sport Buggy is that the the toddler seat reclines in newew models, which is great if you want to have the ability to have both kids nap on the go.

Highlighted Features

  • Canopy with peek-a-boo window
  • A new adjustable ergonomic handle
  • Velcro multi adjustable crotch strap
  • Zipper Recline on doubles kit
  • New quick release one touch hub wheels.
  • Bumper guards for the tires which prevent the younger child from playing with the tires when they are in back.

How It Works
One child rides normally in the stroller (upper left). With a newborn, you unzip the main seat (upper right) allowing it to fall flat into a quasi bassinet and then attach the Doubles Kit (sold separately) for your toddler to sit on top (lower left). Our son used to pass out every time we put him in there as in infant because it's essentially a rocking bassinet that sways back and forth. Once your baby is old enough to sit up, the same seat attaches to the back of the stroller as a caboose (lower right) and then the older child sits in the regular seat up-front again. A lot of people ask me if the the toddler will be okay sitting in the back because they can’t see directly forward. It’s really not as bad as it looks because they can see out of both sides . Both our kids are happy in either position and they even fight over the back, so it's never been an issue at all and they are both usually claustrophobic.

Because it has jogging stroller qualities including large inflatable wheels, the Sport Buggy is great for all seasons and is very easy to maneuver both outdoors and in a store. It also folds relatively compactly for fitting in your trunk or taking on vacation, although for the later I would recommend the custom travel bag if you do to protect it. The bottom line is that everyone I know who has purchased this Phil and Ted's stroller has loved it. It's not the cheapest stroller on the market, but it works so well in so many areas, that's its absolutely worth the premium. Also, you may get a much better price from online merchants(especially with free shipping and no tax) as the Phil and Ted's Strollers are usually only carried by local baby boutiques.

Devil's Advocate:

Part of what makes the Phil and Ted's Sport Buggy great is all the attachments and accessories, however they are mostly a la carte and don’t come cheap. You could easily double the price of the stroller with the accessories so choose wisely. Also, it was also pointed out to me by a reader that the rear seat is at the same level as many cars. If you live in a city and are around exhaust fumes a lot, you may want to test this out.
