Portable Highchair

A portable highchair is a great thing to have for traveling, especially if you won’t be eating solely at restaurants where a highchair is available. It is also great to have for visits to relatives and for when you have friends with kids who are visiting your own house. There are two basic types of portable highchairs, ones that attach to the chair and ones that attach to the table.

Phil & Ted's Lobster Portable Highchair
Phil & Ted's Lobster Portable Highchair
Pros
  • Clamps to most tables to create an instant highchair
  • Holds up to 37lbs, yet weighs only 4lbs and folds completely flat
Cons
  • Will not work on a non-sturdy table or on a table that has a non-standard lip

The Phil and Ted's Lobster is the newer, cooler and more stylish version of the ever-popular Phil & Ted’s Me Too Chair. The Lobster Chair is a lightweight, safe and sturdy, fully collapsible child seat that can go everywhere with you and works for children between 6 months and 3 years of age. It clamps on to most tables between 20 and 95mm thick and holds up to 37 lbs, yet weighs only 4 lbs. The Lobster has more padding than the Me Too and is made of durable, easy to clean nylon for instant clean up. When not in use, the Lobster folds virtually flat and comes with a food tray and carrying bag, making it ideal for travel. We kept one of these in our trunk permanently for when we are at a friend's house or a restaurant that might not have a booster and kept another to pack in our suitcase for vacation.  Our little one loves it because it allows him to be right in the action and sit up at the table like his older brother and sister.

A table based portable highchair will be more secure than a chair based model and will save you some room at the table, however it may not work in all applications, especially if the table is not sturdy or has a non-standard lip.

Given its price point, the Lobster makes a great shower or baby gift and all parents will definitely appreciate it down the road. It is not something that people necessarily think to register for, but will certainly make a great gift.

Two other popular options are the Healthy Care Booster Seat, which is a very well designed travel seat with a detachable, washable tray and the Cooshie Booster, a one piece booster seat is ideal for transitioning your baby from highchair to seat, which can also be used for local travel. We used this to transition our daughter to a chair and kept another at our parent’s house. However, the Phil & Ted’s Lobster truly is the best option for long distance travel because it will fit in a suitcase without taking up space.
